Midcentury Modern

Midcentury Modern: A Timeless, Flexible Design

When it comes to trends in interior design, mid-century modern is here to stay. This popular and timeless design trend spanned from the early 1930s through the mid-1960s. Characterized by clean lines and minimalist aesthetics emphasizing function, the midcentury modern movement influenced many types of design including interior, product, industrial, and graphic design, as well as urban planning and architecture.

Both midcentury modern furniture and architecture emulate its sleek minimalism to show that style doesn’t need any bells and whistles to stand out. Everything had a purpose, designed to take up as little space as possible and forego any of the unnecessary frills common with other design styles. But just because mid-century modern design embraced function over ornament doesn’t mean its pieces aren’t striking. In fact, the sleek look, clean geometric lines and organic forms make the mid-century modern design exceptional and timeless.

One of the downsides of other design styles is that they don’t often play well with others.  For example, it can be challenging to redecorate from Art Deco to contemporary if you’re looking to hold onto any of the same furniture. Midcentury modern design, on the other hand, is well-known for its flexibility. If you don’t want to go all out in designing your home with a mid-century modern style, you don’t have to. Mid-century furniture pairs well with other popular design styles such as contemporary, retro-modern or even traditional homes and interiors.

Like other midcentury modern pieces, the RM58 classic chair has been designed with an equal emphasis on structure, comfort, and material. Unlike other designers, Modzelewski isn’t manipulating one material to look like something else. He designed the armchair out of fiberglass in one of the first pioneering applications of the material not only in Poland but worldwide. The result is a stunning mid-century modern piece that offers flair and elegance while embracing comfort and solid structure at the same time.

Midcentury modern has endured changing times for a reason. Its pieces are well-designed eye-catching yet understated objects, elegant but never ornate, and above all else, practical. If you’re interested in a midcentury design or consider adding a midcentury modern piece to your current design style, the iconic RM58 lounge chair is an excellent choice.
